North Carolina’s golf communities are equal to or better than what’s available in any other state.
If you’re a golfing buff, the ideal location to retire or resettle in North Carolina is its golf paradise of Pinehurst. Living in the Pinewild Country Club community, you are within striking distance of Aberdeen and Southern Pines. It is home to 48 holes of first-class golf. It has 2 complete courses, 1 prepared by Gene Hamm and the other by the legendary Gary Player, a nine-hole par three course, and 3 holes just to practice inside the Pinewild Golf Academy. Enjoy the pool, tennis courts, social occasions such as the Fall Fest and Jazz Fest, and the clubhouse dining room and snack bar.
The most recent Zagat’s Golf Guide pronounced the Tiger’s Eye course at this Carolina golf club community of Ocean Ridge Plantation one of North Carolina’s best. The community consists of over 3,000 acres and about twenty eight hundred houses, the bulk of them single family homes. There are five clubhouses with cafeterias, and convention centers and over 50 clubs and organizations including book clubs, card games and bible study groups, tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming, gym presenting yoga, Pilates, and aerobics classes.
Up the hills is the Trillium North Carolina Golf Club community, which presents an 18-hole course created by Morris Hatalsky. It has lessons, clinics, and a pro-shop. Relish a round of “Garden Golf,” (hike, chip, putt course), hike, play tennis outdoors or indoors, go to the sauna, massage studio or gym. There are weekly clinics covering topics from watercolor painting to gardening and fly-fishing. You can fish and boat on Lake Glenville’s fifteen hundred acres or relish a snifter at dusk and hors d’oeuvres cruise, the epicurean delights of the clubhouse, or grilled cooking. Residents of this property have complementary facilities at Chinquapin, located about ten miles away.
Just south of Wilmington is Winding River Plantation. It blends affordable golf, great scenery, and living options. This North Carolina golf club's entry costs are six thousand dollars, and have all the conveniences you’d think would cost far more. You’ll have games of bridge, tennis courts and walking and biking trails, exercise classes, pools, clubhouse with casual dining, restricted beach club with a footpath to Holden Beach, a twenty seven hole Fred Couples designed course, gymnasium, practice area, putting green and pro shop.
One more North Carolina golf club community near the coast is Cypress Landing, located in Chocowinity. From the two hundred and twenty slip marina on the Pamlico River, you can access the Pamlico Sound and Atlantic Ocean. Bill Love created the community’s 18 hole golf course, putting green, pro-shop, practice area and driving range. Amenities include an 18,000 square foot fitness center, grill style café, watering hole, swimming pool, library, lounge and patio. You also have craft lessons, card games and book and garden clubs.
According to the “Zagat’s 2007-2008 guide to America’s Top Golf Courses,” the 5 best golf courses in North Carolina ar Pinehurst No. 2, Pinehurst No. 8, Pine Needles Lodge, Tiger’s Eye, and Oyster Bay. If you’re a golf buff, North Carolina golf communities have some of the most excellent spots for you.
